Issac
Would you call your son a joke, a prank, a jest? Sounds strange, of course not!!
If so, how does Abraham call his son Isaac?
We are aware of the fact that when Abraham and Sarah receive the news that Sarah will bear a son, they laugh, but why name the child Isaac?
Strange that this moment of surprise, when the angel announces the birth of the child, becomes his name.
In order to understand why this child receives the name Isaac, we need to become familiar with the description of the Holy One, Blessed Be He: ‘He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord will mock them’ (Psalms 2). Sitting in the heavens laughing teaches that the Holy One, Blessed Be He, who brought all the souls into the world, walking upon it and granting them great powers, sees that these people are busy accumulating, collecting, and securing their future. Let us examine how much energy, time, and resources people invest in a beautiful house, in a sophisticated car, in excellent health, in good friends. Sitting in the heavens laughing, for all the efforts to accumulate and collect are certainly not of substance, for the Holy One, Blessed Be He, will anyway grant you what is yours; and what is not yours is certainly not yours. Therefore, why invest so much effort in something that is already within the scope of the Holy One, Blessed Be He’s considerations?
In other words, the Holy One, Blessed Be He, sits and looks at the world and sees what people waste their time on and laughs.
Worrying…?
That the groom will arrive, and the money will arrive, they ask for pregnancy, health is naturally in His hands, so what is everyone so worried about? The Holy One, blessed be He, laughs at this.
And indeed, Sarah and Abraham, who had already lost interest and hope and thought that perhaps they would not have continuation.
Abraham still says to the Holy One, blessed be He, ‘If Ishmael would live before You,’ that Ishmael may continue the seed.
But…
The moment the Holy One, blessed be He, tells them they are going to bear a son, they laugh. Their laughter stems from the connection to the laughter of the Holy One, blessed be He, and the knowledge that the Holy One, blessed be He, naturally takes care of them, the connection to the laughter of the Holy One, blessed be He, who says, ‘I am here, so what is there to worry about…?’
The aspect of ‘He opens His hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing.’
The idea behind the laughter of the Holy One, blessed be He, is that whoever casts upon the Holy One, blessed be He, the responsibility for everything.
And when you face a difficult reality, you have two choices: one choice is to fight, to try to change the decree.
And the second option is to laugh knowing that in any case everything is in His hands and He will already arrange everything. Yitzchak is a man who lived up to his name, knowing that everything is in the hands of the Holy One, blessed be He, and all that remains is to laugh. The concept of laughter is the notion in which a person throws all his needs onto the Holy One, blessed be He, smiles, and says, ‘There is Someone who takes care of me,’ and no matter how much I strive, I do not even have the slightest possibility to take care of myself the way the Holy One, blessed be He, does for me. This is where the name Yitzchak comes from.
So what, are you saying to stop trying, stop working, stop striving, stop aspiring, and instead just laugh, only laugh…!?
No!!!
A person needs to work, strive, make an effort, sweat and… laugh!!!
That is the correct combination: on the one hand, to laugh and throw all responsibility onto the Holy One, blessed be He, and on the other hand, to be His partner in action, which requires effort, thought, initiative, sweat, but does not require worry.
Let God take care of it, you just laugh…
